Vintage fabric art

 

Need a punch of delicious vintage color in your life?  Who doesn't.  About a month ago, during my mission organization, I asked myself..."Are you ever going to do anything with all your wonderful fabric?"  Then I saw the box of canvases waiting to be art and answered myself.  "Paint with fabric"  I created a collage with some of my favorites and added some touched of vintage wallpaper and seam bindings.  There is even a little clip of embroidery pattern transfer on this, framed with a single crochet strand.

This is nice large size 16x16 inch canvas and as soon as I decide if it needs a matte or gloss top coat, it will go Etsy

My most sought after bag

Here is an "impulse post" thanks to Hélène who noticed a my bag sitting on my necklace holder. I took pictures of it when I was taking some of the bedroom since it was pre-blog made and I realized I had not photos of it.  This little metal bag was a treasure at an antique shop I found a few years ago for maybe $3.  I decided to cover it with french book pages and some art pictures on the sides.  Everywhere I go with it, people want to know where I got it and how to get one.  I have a friend who has been on the antique search for a bag to do for her for some time now.

A time to stop and remember indeed...  Do you remember the Spirograph?  Wow, times have changed from the one we grew up with. Spirograph had pins in it and they were allowed to sell it and we were allowed to play with it and survived.  I had a blast taking out the Spirograph for this.  If you need some fun entertainment for yourself or a child, go get one and while you are at it grab one of those pens that has the four different colors all in one.  They are still as entertaining at this age as they are for the 5 year old who gets their hands on one!

One more thing to answer my friend Gaye  about the size of this.  I would say, without measuring, the longest pages are about 8 inches in length and the widest are about 6 inches!

To answer a few questions, these pages are created one by one, on cardboard,cut up file folders, heavy bristol, card-stock, bingo cards, the backs or fronts of old greeting cards...you name it.  As long as I had something that would hold up and not be to thin, it was fair game.  I still have several more pages to show you and it amazes me how fast they added up.  Being able to create on a small level really did add some balance to my life so I love this page in particular!

In the past week or more I have not had a whole lot of gumption to create a larger piece.  When I had a moment to sit back and let my mind wander after Dallas's passing I picked up a book I bought a while back, Postmark LA.  A book filled with inspiration from some women I really admire.  I have always enjoyed glimpses of Rebecca Sower's work but I really took to her art journals.  I could just pick up my scraps and pretty little things and start one page at a time.  Tiny steps to a bigger piece. Another "experiment" for my word of the year.  I have several pages I will show over the next few days and I am sure it is not done yet.  This will be a special journal for me to write around the images, yes I will actually write in it and fill it with fond memories and silly thoughts...when it is filled I am sure to have another one ready for more.  I really felt this to be so therapeutic and a lot of ideas are stemming from simple little pages. So thank you to all the gals who made this fun book, you did an awesome job!

Sunday Postcard Art~Hearts

 

 

"Hearts", plural, is the theme over at Sunday Postcard Art so I made two. I am not sure how they would hold up if I actually mailed them.  If I were to mail them they would go to Leah at Creative Every Day.  Still working with her "words" inspiration for the month, I dedicate this post to her.  Leah, you have inspired us all to "try" and to that we answered "ok".  You have inspired so many to find what is in them and bring it out through their art as your own art has unfolded in a spectacular manner. Kudos to you girl for all you have done for the art community, we appreciate it.

Mixed Media Monday~Romance

I have been saving this for a few days for a great MMM topic... "Romance" .  I am still working with words based on the theme of the month at Creative Every Day. A word that should often be spoken with Romance is "Revive".

 

This chunky 12x12" canvas stared with book pages and an inspiration postcard of Antonio Canova's "Psyche Revived by Love's Kiss" sculpture in marble at the Louvre.  Is there anything more romantic?  To think it was carved out of marble, that is romantic alone.  It is also known as "Psyche revived by Cupid's Kiss".  Perfect for "heart" month!

  

I experimented more with sculpting myself on this one.  The heart was sculpted out of layers of ripped book pages.

 

But it was too harsh to me.  I doodled on it a bit then did a few more top secret things and a final coat of bees wax to get a brilliant softness and a touch as smooth as carved marble.

 

 

 

I wanted to include many shots.  It is another one that has so much texture and smoothness, depth and sheen.  All elements I have a hard time capturing with a camera.
